Its influence can be found in the West too; in 2003, British caricaturist Dave Brown alluded to Goya’s painting Saturn Devouring One of His Children in his depiction of Ariel Sharon eating a Palestinian child. Der Stürmer is dead, but its images and influence live on.

The indictment against Streicher concluded that although he had been “less directly involved in the commission of the crimes against some of the Jews than were his co-conspirators,” his propaganda, as Bytwerk put it, “had prepared the way for genocide.” As the International Commission at Nuremberg found:

The crime of Streicher is that he made these crimes [the extermination and annihilation of millions of Jews] possible, which they never would have been had it not been for him and those like him. Without Streicher and his propaganda, the Kaltenbrunners, the Himmlers and General Stroops would have had nobody to carry out their orders. In its extent Streicher’s crime is probably greater and more far-reaching than that of any of the other defendants. The misery which they caused ceased with their capture. The effect of this man’s crime, of the poison he poured into the minds of young boys and girls goes on, for he concentrated upon the youth and childhood of Germany. He leaves behind him a legacy of almost a whole people poisoned with hate, sadism and murder, and perverted by him. That people remain a problem, and perhaps a menace to the rest of civilization, for perhaps generations to come.
